What to PackThe Mayan people of Guatemala's western highlands are modest, so it is respectful to dress conservatively. Women should be sure to bring shirts with sleeves, and pants or a long skirt for visiting more remote communities. As a general rule, Mayans do not like to have their pictures taken, so it is always polite, or even necesary to ask permission before taking a foto. It is advisable to leave your valuable jewelery at home, as wearing it may attract unwanted attention. Although Mayan weavings are a major item sold to tourists, it is considered disrespectful to wear any indigenous clothing while in Guatemala. Antigua, however, is a fairly modern city, and most people dress in average, western style clothing. You will be pleasantly surprised with the quality of the nightlife in Antigua, and will be dissapointed if you dont bring a few nice things to wear out at night. Guys, bring jeans. In Guatemala, it is viewed as immature to wear shorts, and you will feel out of place in a bar or discoteque. A nice pair of shoes may also come in handy when you suddenly discover you were born to Salsa! Wondering about technology products? Antigua is filled with wireless hotspots to connect a laptop, but you may want to consider that while Antigua is very safe, there is a high risk involved when traveling around carrying laptops, ipods, etc. If you plan on traveling before or after your study time, it might be best to leave your laptop at home. There are internet cafes on every corner in Antigua, open from about 8am to midnight. Earplugs are a very good idea! They block out street dogs, cackling roosters, and whatever else might wake you if you are a light sleeper. With all of that in mind, we have provided a reccomended packing list for your time in Antigua.
Note that almost anything you need is available in Antigua as well. If you dont want to pack an umbrella or a whole gallon of shampoo, no need to worry, you can easily buy them here. Check out the Weather page for more information on life in Antigua and to figure out what types of clothing to bring
